How the 10-week study works

The study is a 10-week journey designed to guide your progress toward better mental health. Each session lasts 30 minutes and is done using the Flow headset and app.

Activation Phase (weeks 1 – 3)
You’ll complete 5 sessions per week to build momentum and activate key areas of the brain.

Strengthening Phase (weeks 4 – 10)
You’ll transition to just 2 sessions per week to preserve and strengthen your progress.

Your commitment

To ensure the study’s success and to receive your free Flow headset, you’ll need to complete a few simple tasks.

  • Consistency: Follow the clinically-proven schedule for 10 weeks.

  • Check-ins: The Flow team will check in with you at weeks 4 and 6 to see how you’re getting on, address any concerns, and answer your questions.

  • Feedback: You will also be asked to provide a testimonial to share your experience and feedback. These testimonials will be shared in marketing materials during and after the study period.

  • We'll ask you to complete three surveys: an induction survey and surveys at 4 and 10 weeks of treatment. These surveys will record your experience using Flow and how it affects your mood and other symptoms.

Helping you get the best results

Over the course of the study, we’ll provide you with helpful information so you can get the most out of your Flow headset. You’ll learn what to expect, how the treatment works to help with depression, and simple tips for achieving the best results.

Important information: FAQs and consent

The Flow headset is a wearable device that delivers small electrical pulses to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), an area in the front of the brain. This area is linked to motivation, decision making, working memory, and planning functions that become impaired in depression.

The Flow headset uses a gentle method called transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS). It targets a specific part of the brain, the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), which is often underactive in people with depression.

By delivering a very small, safe electrical current (about 2mA) to this area, Flow helps to increase its activity over time. This helps to regulate mood, focus, sleep, and appetite. Because the stimulation is direct, Flow typically has fewer and milder side effects than some medications.

If you’re eligible, our partners at Flow will be in touch to arrange a 10-minute conversation to explain the study in more detail before you start.

You will get to keep the Flow headset, worth £399, once you have completed the full 10-week period.

By registering for this study, you consent to your data being securely shared with our partners at Flow. This data is used to fulfil the study and to create marketing materials.
