Although it can happen for several reasons, women tend to experience incontinence more than men – whether that’s new mums, menopausal women, or even women with busy, more stressful lives.
Stress incontinence is often due to weakening or damage to the muscles used to prevent urination, such as the pelvic floor. This is common during pregnancy and post vaginal birth.
Urge incontinence usually occurs from overactivity of the muscles which control the bladder. Possible causes include severe dehydration, excess alcohol consumption, and neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease.
Overflow incontinence is often caused by a blockage in your bladder, which prevents it from emptying fully. These could be in the form of bladder stones or tumours, with weakened muscles exacerbating the problem.
Total incontinence can be caused by problems with the bladder from birth, a spinal injury or fistulas, which are small, tunnel-like holes that can form between the bladder and a nearby area – creating abnormal connections that lead to leakage.
Why does it affect women more than men?
There are a few unique factors that make incontinence more common in women than in men, these include:
Pregnancy and childbirth – pregnancy and vaginal birth can weaken the pelvic floor muscles and impact the nerves that aid with bladder control.
Menopause – this leads to a natural decline in oestrogen levels, which can affect the tissues that support the bladder and urethra.
Female anatomy – the female urinary tract is shorter, which can make bladder control generally more vulnerable to changes.
How does incontinence impact women?
A study by Elitone* that spoke to 500 women living in the UK found that as many as 42% of women say that incontinence has affected their self-confidence.
More than 1 in 5 say that it has had a negative impact on their mental health, yet only 50% of women who consider incontinence a problem actively seek help for it.*
Lots of women can experience a loss of control, finding they change their lifestyle to account for bladder leaks – particularly in public settings. This can have a significant impact on your health and wellbeing.
Psychological impact
Incontinence can have a negative impact on self-image and confidence in women. Similarly, it can also increase stress levels and anxiety around accidents happening at inconvenient times.
80% of women experiencing incontinence express emotional distress, and 70% worry about travelling more than 30 minutes from home.
This can affect sleep, sexual function and concentration, all contributing to mental health challenges.
In more severe cases, this worry might even lead to women withdrawing from activities or relationships, both social and work.
Physical impact
Bladder leaks increase the risk of recurring UTIs (urinary tract infections) in women. This is because moisture and leftover urine contribute to the necessary conditions for bacteria and infections to develop – including skin irritation in general.
Nocturia (frequent nighttime urination) is a common symptom of an overactive bladder, leading to fatigue from disturbed sleep.
It can also impact indirectly, with reduced physical activity. Women will consider reducing their exercise routines, like running, aerobics or even walking, due to fear of leakage
Say hello to confidence with Elitone®
What is Elitone?
Elitone is designed to help women regain control and confidence by directly addressing stress and mixed urinary incontinence, as well as offering benefit to those who struggle with urge incontinence.
It provides gentle, effective muscle stimulation to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, performing longer and more effective contractions than traditional Kegel exercises. It also sends some stimulation to calm urgency.
Kegels are a series of exercises that support the pelvic muscles. These muscles play an important role in urinary continence, and the stimulation provided by Elitone has a similar strengthening effect.
Regain confidence. Regain control.
Elitone empowers women to reduce bladder leaks, minimise their reliance on absorbent pads, and regain the confidence to enjoy daily activities without worry.
In Elitone’s study*, 95% of participants achieved fewer leaks after six weeks, with an average reduction of 72%, and reduction in pad usage by 85%
An effective, non-invasive treatment option for women
Elitone is suitable for women of all ages who are experiencing stress and mixed urinary incontinence.
Particularly those who leak urine during activities such as laughing, sneezing or exercising, those who struggle to perform Kegel exercises correctly or consistently, those who prefer non-invasive treatment options, or those who have limited access to physical therapy.
How does Elitone work?
Unlike vaginally inserted alternatives, Elitone is a non-invasive treatment worn under your clothes, so it’s designed for comfort and convenience. With minimal interruption, it only needs to be used for 20 minutes per day.
The blue areas of the GelPad component are gently adhered to the skin around the pubic bone – it’s very thin and doesn’t pull on hair – while the attached controller can be clipped to the waistband of your underwear.
Using the controller, you can set and adjust the treatment intensity. The gentle stimulation contracts and relaxes your pelvic floor, strengthening the muscles and reducing bladder leakage over time.
